Veterinary Internship Program
Lexington Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine’s veterinary internship program was established in 2012. We currently offer 1-2 surgical internships annually. The internship is intended to provide veterinary graduate students with the foundation to pursue a residency program or enter private practice.
Primary responsibilities will include diagnostics and care of hospitalized patients, emergency care, imaging, assistance with lameness exams, surgery and sports medicine procedures.
Internships are for one calendar year, begining in June. Applications are accepted year round, but applicants who wish to apply for a preceding year are expected to apply the fall before the year they are interested in. Notification of acceptance is 3-6 weeks following application.
To apply for an internship position, please include a curriculum vitae, letter of intent, three letters of reference, and your veterinary school transcripts. Please email all the previously mentioned information or any questions regarding internship application to Victoria Schumacher, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
**Please note, individuals with the intent of applying for an internship are strongly advised to take part in an externship, prior to the internship application process. This will make you a more appealing applicant.**
Please Note: We are not a teaching institution, therefore you will primarily be learning by observation
Lexington Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine offers students in a graduate veterinary program and opportunity to experience an externship that satisfies the requirements for their degree. There is an enormous amount of information to be gained by observation and exposure. Clinicians, interns and technicians make every effort to explain hospital cases and procedures whenever possible. Externs in the program work with hospital clinicians on a rotational basis. These students have the opportunity to observe equine specialists in surgery, anesthesiology, sports medicine, and diagnostic imaging, depending on the season and caseload.
Unfortunately no housing or transportation is available at this time, we apologize for the inconvenience.
To request an externship application or for additional information, please contact Victoria Schumacher, at email@example.com. Reference letters are appreciated but are not mandatory for the application process. After applications are received, and dates are approved, applicants will be notified via email.
Lexington Equine Surgery and Sports Medicine offers an externship program for students enrolled in an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician Program. The experience is designed to provide students with the understanding of clinical practice under the supervision of a Licensed Veterinary Technologist. A period of clinical experience introduces the veterinary technician student to the various daily activities of an equine veterinary technician. Students rotate through all areas of the hospital including radiology, surgery, and medicine. Time frames are arranged on an individual basis to fit each students' needs and schedules. To request an externship or for additional information, please contact Victoria Schumacher at firstname.lastname@example.org. Reference letters, and an idea of the dates and times you are interested are in are appreciated for the application process.
A limited number of volunteers are welcome at any given time. Undergraduate and high school students interested in veterinary medicine are welcome. To request to volunteer or for additional information, please contact Victoria Schumacher, include date, time and duration of volunteer time you are interested in, (email@example.com)
